The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted widespread thunderstorms and rainy weather conditions across various regions of the country from Monday to Wednesday.
This outlook was detailed in a weather report released by the agency in Abuja, which outlines expected weather patterns across different states.
According to NiMet, thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kaduna, Taraba, and Bauchi States during the morning hours on Monday. As the day progresses, these conditions are expected to spread to Kebbi, Adamawa, Sokoto, and other northern states.
“Over the North Central region, intermittent rains are expected over parts of Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, the Federal Capital Territory, and Plateau States during the morning hours,” NiMet stated. The agency further predicted that later in the day, thunderstorms and intermittent rains would continue in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Kogi States.
For the southern regions, NiMet forecasted cloudy skies in the morning, with intermittent rains expected over Osun, Oyo, Ekiti, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States later in the day.
On Tuesday, NiMet predicted thunderstorms over Taraba State in the morning, with further thunderstorms expected over Bauchi, Kaduna, Kebbi, Gombe, and Yobe States during the afternoon and evening hours. In the North Central region, intermittent rains are expected over Plateau and Nasarawa States, with continued rainfall and thunderstorms anticipated later in the day.
The southern region is expected to experience intermittent rains, with NiMet highlighting slim prospects of drizzle over some areas in the morning. The afternoon is likely to bring heavier rains over Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.
On Wednesday, the weather outlook indicates that Kaduna State will see thunderstorms in the morning, with these conditions extending to Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, and Kebbi States later in the day. In the North Central region, intermittent rains are forecasted over Niger, Benue, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory in the morning, with continued rain expected into the afternoon and evening.
NiMet has advised residents, particularly those in flood-prone areas, to take necessary precautions due to the high likelihood of urban flooding caused by heavy downpours.
“Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur. Public should, therefore, take adequate precaution, adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.
“Public and Airline operators are advised to get updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.
