Since the declaration by President Muhammadu Buhari of June 12 as Democracy Day, there has been speculation as to whether the day will be public holiday this year.
Until the president’s declaration on June 6, Nigeria marked May 29 (Democracy Day) as public holiday.
A statement issued on the official Facebook page of Aso Rock Villa however clarified the issue, saying the president said the day would only be public holiday “in future years.”
“There have been questions regarding whether or not there will be a FEDERAL public holiday on June 12, 2018.
“The answer is NO.
“Presidential Order says June 12 “in FUTURE YEARS will replace May 29th as a National Public Holiday in celebration of Nigeria Democracy Day.”
